Our Story

Jimmy Carter, a third-generation Californian born in the Hillcrest neighborhood, initially launched our location as an American eatery. Inspired by his childhood visits to Ramona’s Kitchen in Old Town, he opened a second Mexican Café on Washington Street. Over time, Jimmy merged the two menus, offering traditional American breakfasts alongside authentic Mexican dishes.

Today, Jimmy Carter’s Mexican Café is a cherished fixture in the Banker’s Hill/Hillcrest neighborhood. Our dedicated family of loyal customers returns time and again to reunite with the staff and savor the food. Jimmy’s deep San Diego roots fuel his passion for giving back to the community that raised him. With a personality as inviting and authentic as his menu, Jimmy has woven his restaurant into the fabric of San Diego for over two decades.
